Many enjoy this drink whose history goes back thousands of years. In any movies of ancient times one sees huge dinners with the people drinking goblets of wine. Beautiful goblets and other evidence of this practice has been found in many archaeological digs. Many of the royalty had wineries at their castle.

When a person drives around the countryside they see various signs on the road announcing a winery and inviting people in to taste their product. There are even wine tours in many places where a bus will transport people to a number of these places. If one likes wine this is an excellent way to be able to sample some of the many kinds available.

Wine is produced mainly from grapes but there are other types of wine as well. Wines such as dandelion, apple and strawberry are quite well known. The wineries are where the grapes, or these fruits and plants, are processed to be turned into wine. There are a surprising number of these companies who do not grow their own grapes but have them shipped in.

There are wineries all over the world and in most states of the U. S., even in Alaska. However, the best known, as well as grape growers, in the United States are located in Napa and Sonoma Counties, California. A good number of the grape growing companies in that area were started in the 1800′s.

There were a number of wineries that had to shut down or go out of business during prohibition when liquor of any kind was illegal. Some of them are sophisticated to the point of having their own laboratories and research teams to constantly test the blending of different types of grapes. Many of the wineries today started out as home winemakers and have become very successful.

A large number of the finer wines combine several different kinds of grapes to produce a unique flavor. Some of these grapes are fermented separately before entering the blend. Fermentation of the grapes takes place in stainless steel tanks to which yeast and sugar is added. There are two periods of fermentation.

Following the final fermentation, they are transferred to barrels to age. Some use special barrels, such as American Oak which gives an extra special flavor to the wine. After the wine is placed in a barrel it must age for approximately nine months before it can be bottled. There are competitions each year to judge the best wines. It is very prestigious to win the top honors for such an event.

Some wines are aged for years and bring out a very different taste then those that have been recently bottled. This type of wine is usually quite expensive, the more it ages the higher the price. Many wealthy people have complete wine cellars with a large selection of various wines to enjoy or serve their guests. However, no matter where it is made or by whom, there is someone in the world enjoying a glass of wine as this article is read.

Get the exclusive low down on the five biggest mistakes home owners make when building wine cellars.

Mistake one. Underground cellars are always just the right temperature

Most home owners assume an underground cellar is naturally the correct temperature in other words cool while in actual fact the opposite is often true. On the one hand during summer especially with a concrete ceiling, these rooms turn into hell boxes and can literally cook the wine. On the other, cellars do become cooler during winter and it these extreme variation in temperature that ruin wine.

Mistake two. Incorrect climate control equipment

Steer clear from installing a traditional air con in cellars. Air conditioners will not keep the room at a consistent low temperature and dont address humidity problems at all. Perfect cellar temperature for all wine is approximately 14 degrees Celsius, give or take one degree whilst humidity levels need to be between 65% and 75%. Low humidity will inevitably lead to corks drying out, in turn letting in air and oxidising the wine. High humidity will result in label mold. Its thus essential to install the correct climate control equipment for example a cellar conditioner that can keep the temperature low and humidity high enough.

Mistake three. Incorrect insulation

A cellar must be correctly insulated with the right material type to allow for effective functioning of the cellar conditioner, in turn cutting energy usage significantly.

Mistake four. Bad door choice

Its important to steer clear from simply picking a cellar door for its aesthetic appeal. A cellar door needs to be technically correct and made from the correct material in order to provide an air tight seal and good insulation. The door however needs to suit the total look and feel of the cellar which may be a bit tricky to get right the first time round.

Mistake five. The right rack

It really doesnt pay to spend a lot of money on racking that looks fabulous but doesnt function properly. Its essential for racking to be user friendly and take a wine lovers ever changing needs and requirements into consideration.

There is an endless selection of wine racks to pick and choose from falling within in different price ranges. There is however a lot more than initially meets the eye. Its important to strike a balance between the look of racks, convenience, space optimization and budgets when choosing wine racking and its recommended that you deal with a reputable dealer who carries an extensive range so that all of the above mentioned issues can be addressed.

Other points to consideration

Above list is by no means exhaustive. It goes on to include considerations such as lighting, right flooring, sufficient airflow and ventilation, flood prevention and other technical aspects. The solution here is to call in the help of a professional when building a wine cellar at home. If you call in the help of a pro early, you will eliminate many many problems while getting the dream cellar youve always wanted.

So you’ve decided to join the ranks of thousands of posh wine connoisseurs. Now you may be pondering what wine accessories you need to enjoy your wine. We’ve got the low down on the top wine accessories you must have.

The first and most important wine accessory is a bottle opener aka corkscrew. The most common corkscrews available on the market currently are the winged or wine key style. As the name states a winged style corkscrew has a lever on each side that will erect as soon as the centre screw is inserted into the cork. The wings are then lowered to remove the cork. A wine key is a little more petite and uses a single position to provide leverage to pop the cork. Both corkscrew types are available at most local retailers and cost about US Dollars 5.00.

Okay so now you’ve opened the bottle of wine, the second accessory you’ll need is a wine glass or two. It always comes highly recommended that the glasses match the wine or spirit you are drinking or serving. A large, broad bowl style glass is best for serving red and smaller glasses for white wines. If you are however on a tight budget or have space limitation you can opt for a single glass type. Many glass cos produce universal style glasses, suitable for any wine.

Must-have accessory number three comes in the form of a wine stopper. Bottle stoppers are available in an endless selection of styles, colors and sizes to suit the budget, taste and needs of wine lovers to a t . Solid metal, a combination of metal and plastic as well as combination of metal and cork are excellent wine stopper materials that will preserve the wine while protecting it from air contamination.

Steer clear from going to cheaply on your bottle stopper investment. A low quality stopper will not protect the wine from the air that has already entered the bottle. The air inside will cause the wine to expiring a lot quicker than an unopened bottle.

A vacuum bottle stopper will extend the life of the opened wine significantly when compared to a conventional bottle stopper. Vacuum stoppers are really user friendly and cost effective. All thats required from the connoisseur is to place the stoppers in the open bottle and use the pump to draw the air out. This type of stopper is ideal for those looking to store wine for extended periods of time.

A wine rack is the next accessory you’ll need. Racks are available in an endless selection of styles, colours and sizes to suit any budget, decor and needs. Popular styles include but are definitely not limited to mounted, hanging and counter top. Finishes range from stainless steel and iron to wood.

The list of wine accessories available on the market today are just plain exhausting, its thus important to remember that not all accessories are essential to becoming a wine connoisseur, or to simply enjoy the endless pleasure wine has to offer.

As with any grape variety Sauvignon Blanc differs significantly from one part of the world to the other. There is just no way on earth that the Sauvignons of the Calabrese region of Italy will taste the same as that of Wellington in South Africa. Although most are interchangeable as far as food pairing goes you can enhance the taste and pleasure you get by carefully picking your pairings. Weve got the low down on the best food pairings for Sauvignon Blanc:

Minerally Sauvignon Blancs in the form of Sancerre and Pouilly Fume and other cooler climate Sauvignon Blancs. The best foods are items that are simple and barely seasoned including raw or lightly cooked shellfish in the form of oysters, prawns, crab and olive oil grilled fish such as sea bass. They also go well with dishes containing raw or lightly cooked tomato for example gazpacho, tomato consomme or vinaigrettes and goat cheeses. These Blancs are great with Japanese dishes including seafood-based dim sum, sushi, sashimi and delicately smoked salmon.

Citrussy Sauvignons. These Blancs have a simple yet distinct lemony flavour and range from unoaked white Bordeaux to the more intense Adelaide Sauvignon Blancs. Chilean and Argentinian Sauvignons will also fall in this category.

Pair these Blancs with grilled fish dishes including sardines and mackerel as well as fried fish like goujons, whitebait and plain old fish and chips. Even grilled chicken or lamb without any potent marinades taste great with Citrussy Sauvignons. They work well with Greek and Mexican foods as well as any fresh tasting dishes that contain avo, tomato, green onions, artichokes, olives and strong cheeses for example feta. They pair exquisitely with giant garlic prawns and char grilled squid as well as cheeses flavoured with herbs specifically garlic for example Boursin.

Aromatic Sauvignon Blancs and Sauvignon blends for example Western Australian Sem-Sauv blends. Now these Blancs pair fantastically with salads especially ones that contain seafood and herbs as well as greens such as asparagus, pea-shoots and green peppers. You can drink them with similar dishes to Minerally Blancs but these flavours need to be more pronounced such as lime, chilli and coriander.

Oaked Sauvignon for example oaked white Bordeaux or fume blanc. You can drink these with white meats such as chicken or veal, accompanied by a creamy sauce or spring vegetable. Pasta dishes containing a spring veggie and buttery or creamy sauce also go together well.

A rather basic yet effective tip for food and wine pairing is to consider the tastes and flavors of each. Remember the meal is going to be the focal point not the wine, so its best to start there. Do the ingredients require a rich savory sauce or lots of herbs and spices such as garlic? If so, you should rather opt for a red wine that can stand up to such a dish instead of a Sauvignon.

Its all about figuring out what you enjoy personally, and what tastes best when you and your guests eat dinner.

Whether you decide on online or offline purchases, one thing is for sure- it’s very easy to get confused about what wine glasses to buy for special events or even for general use. They range from tall and skinny to short and stout, not even mentioning everything in between. With all these endless choices, what type of glasses should you buy? Let’s have a closer look in our complete guide on how to choose a wine glass.

It is a rock solid fact that wine is definitely about a lot more than just its exquisite taste. There is a certain depth to wine that is essential to true wine lovers, who believe that every single aspect of wine should be savored and enjoyed to genuinely appreciate the beauty of the wine. This is the exact reason why a genuine wine connoisseur will know that the glass you use to serve wine in is just as essential as the fine drink itself.

The appeal of wine is in its taste, smell, and visual aspect. The way light plays on champagne bubbles, the legs formed on the glass inside when you swirl the drink, and the way aromas are just captured within the glass are all things to keep in mind when learning how to choose wine glasses.

Its of utmost importance to choose a wine glass very carefully as you risk muffling the fabulous flavour and body of the wine. With such endless choices, though, choosing the perfect wine glass can be just plain impossible.

Your choice will firstly depend on your lifestyle and how you use the glass, and secondly on the type of wine are you drinking or planning to serve at a function. The wine glass type must match the type of wine served to a t.

Champagne glasses also commonly referred to as flutes are tall and thin, with a very narrow opening at the glass top. The reason for the narrow opening is that it stops the immediate release of the carbon dioxide which is Champagnes main ingredient. The use of a shorter glass with a wider opening at the top will result in Champagne becoming flatter significantly faster when compared to a flute.

Flute glasses should also be used for ciders for the exact same reason as champagne.

Chardonnay glasses are also tall but with a subtle bowl. The bowl helps keep the wine cold. Mentioned glasses are commonly used for white wine varieties, due to the fact that it brings out the wines boldest flavors.

Bordeaux and Burgundy glasses are balloon shaped, with Burgundy glasses having a slightly larger bowl. Both are designed to enhance the wines flavor. These taller glasses have wider bowls in order to allow the wine to breathe and develop its exquisite full bouquet, and in essence, have better flavor.

Above mentioned wine glasses are great starting points for any stemware collection. There are many specialty shapes, styles and sizes especially for spirit drinks and liqueurs. Start with or even go back to basics and you will soon be on your way to being a true wine connoisseur.
